Salinity Solutions, an innovative UK-based engineering tech startup, has recently garnered significant financial support from SQM Lithium Ventures, a venture capital initiative by the globally recognized SQM. This strategic move aims to bolster new technologies within the lithium sector, highlighting the industry’s expanding focus on sustainable and efficient solutions.
The startup announced a substantial initial investment of $1.27 million on Tuesday, a testament to SQM Lithium Ventures’ confidence in Salinity’s potential to revolutionize the water treatment landscape. Salinity Solutions has proudly entered SQM Lithium Ventures’ esteemed portfolio alongside technological pioneers such as Altilium Clean Technology and Electric Era, marking a significant milestone in its journey.
At the heart of Salinity’s mission is its proprietary “batch reverse osmosis” water treatment technology. This innovation stands as the world’s first commercially manufactured system designed to significantly mitigate the environmental footprint of water purification processes. The system champions efficiency, yielding higher wastewater purification rates, minimizing waste, and showcasing a compact, portable design — all while consuming less energy. Salinity has secured approval for its first out of five registered patents in pivotal regions, including the European Union, China, and the United States.
Since its inception in 2021, Salinity has embarked on successful trials across diverse sectors such as lithium mining, municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, and the food industry. These ventures have cultivated a robust sales pipeline that spans various sectors and geographic locations.
Salinity Solutions’ CEO, Richard Bruges, emphasized how SQM’s investment will propel the company towards achieving its 2024 objectives, which include ramping up unit sales and securing its inaugural licensing agreement. He highlighted the synergistic potential between SQM’s strategic interests and geographic presence and Salinity’s ambitious growth plans.
SQM’s investment is aligned with its dedication to enhancing efficiency and minimizing its environmental footprint, as part of its broader sustainability aspirations. These include ambitious goals like reducing groundwater usage by 40% by 2030, curbing brine extraction in the Salar de Atacama, and achieving carbon neutrality in its lithium production processes by the same year.
As part of their collaborative efforts, Salinity Solutions will conduct a pilot project in the Salar de Atacama, signaling a hands-on approach to addressing water and lithium extraction challenges. Angeles Romo, the director of SQM Lithium Ventures, shared her optimism for Salinity Solutions’ ability to scale and make a significant environmental impact across various industries and regions. This investment underlines SQM’s commitment to water as one of its primary investment focal points, alongside lithium and electromobility, marking a pioneering move in integrating water treatment innovations into the lithium extraction industry.
